Scouting in 2018 was Instagram DMs and the occasional supermarket sighting. Scouting in 2026 is a different operation.

This is the honest 2026 playbook.

What changed

Three things.

Social media is no longer a scout funnel. Every model agency tried Instagram DMs from 2017 to 2021. The signal-to-noise ratio collapsed. The talents who get found on Instagram are usually already in conversation with three other agencies.

Regional events came back. Dance competitions, fashion shows in mid-sized cities, design school showcases. We attend 30 to 35 of these per year. Slower channel, much higher signal.

The development phase got more serious. In 2018 an agency could sign a talent and "see what happens." Today the cost of a bad signing (development time, comp cards, polaroids, mother agency contracts) is high enough that the screening has to be tighter.

The 2026 funnel

For a Mother Agency like ours, the funnel looks like:

Channel 1, Regional events. Dance competitions, regional fashion shows, school showcases. We attend 30+ per year. 60% of new signings come from this channel.

Channel 2, Direct applications. Our #Getscouted form. 200-300 applications per month. We respond to every one. About 1% gets to a meeting.

Channel 3, Referrals. Other agencies, talent we already represent, photographers we work with. Slow channel, very high quality.

Channel 4, Social media. Still part of the mix but heavily filtered. We do not DM cold. We watch.

The 1% conversion from direct applications is not a bug. The bar is what keeps the talent base strong.

What we look for

The phenotype answer is irrelevant. What we actually look for:

The development bet

Once signed, a talent enters a 6 to 12 month development phase. Three to five test shoots. Polaroids. Comp card. Test placements with partner agencies.

The economics: we invest ~€3000-5000 per development talent. About 60% make it to a productive book. 40% do not, for various reasons, and we close the development agreement cleanly.

This is why we sign carefully. A "sign everything that moves" shop has a 5-10% success rate. We aim for 60%+.

Why this matters to brands

If you book talent from a serious Mother Agency, you get a developed talent. Polaroids that are real, not curated. A book that reflects actual range. A representation that holds the contract through the shoot.

Our talent base sits on this approach. 107 talents, all developed, all under documented contracts.

For brands: Casting Direction pulls from this talent base plus partner agencies. The brief stays clean, the talent shows up prepared.
